The meeting will take place from the 1st to the 5th of September 2025 at the Faculty of Biology & Environmental Protection, University of Lodz and in the adjacent UniLodz Training & Conference Centre, where accommodation for participants will also be available. Given that we have booked the conference centre also for the two days before and after the ICA, the organisation of some associated workshops during these days will be possible, if someone wants to propose a specific subject.
The Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Hydrobiology has an almost eighty-year tradition of conducting research on the taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of various groups of invertebrate animals. With a total of almost 50 employees and doctoral students, it is the largest unit in the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz. The research of the scientific teams in our department focuses on a wide range of model organisms, e.g. crustaceans, insects (both currently living and fossil), myriapods, molluscs and annelids. We study both the diversity and evolutionary history of these animals, as well as the patterns and drivers behind their distribution, both in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and the ecology of individual species, their assemblages and also symbiomes. An important aspect of our activities are studies of biodiversity at the genetic level, as well as investigating the role of invasive alien species in ecosytems.
Our activities are carried out at the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Protection, the largest of the five institutes in the Faculty, grouping 25 departments. The faculty members conduct research that falls under various scientific specialisations, such as biochemistry, biophysics, geobotany, hydrobiology and marine biology, zoology, ecology, anthropology, plant cytology and cytogenetics, plant physiology, neurophysiology, and microbiology and immunology. Research is conducted at different levels of the organisation of matter, i.e. at the level of molecules, cells, organisms, populations and ecosystems.
The studies pursued at the Faculty are of a basic, applied or methodological nature, and their topics are focused on three main problems:
the biological environment, its current state, protection, exploitation and transformation;
structure and function of plant and animal cells as well as of microorganisms;
biomedical and biotechnological topics.
The departments of our Faculty also implement joint didactic programmes, the main task of which is to coordinate the education of students in Biology, Environmental Protection, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biomonitoring and Ecological Biotechnologies, Eco-City and Forensic Biology.
Proudly, we are the biggest and among the most scientifically prominent biological university faculties in Poland!
The UniLodz Training & Conference Centre (CSK) is an accommodation and conference complex located in the city center close to university facilities, as well as the Łódź-Fabryczna train station and popular places visited in Lodz, including Piotrkowska Street, Manufaktura, EC1, Monopolis.
All rooms in the CSK are equipped with a bathroom, TV, refrigerator, hair dryer, electric kettle, and hotel accessories. Free WI-FI is available throughout the entire complex.
The building is made available solely for the implementation of the statutory purposes of the University of Lodz, as a result of which the spaces may be used to organize scientific conventions, conferences, congresses, symposia, hereinafter referred to as scientific meetings, and to conduct lectures organized or co-organized by the University of Lodz.
The X Student House (Olimp) of the University of Lodz offers a total of 618 places in rooms with a bathroom and a kitchenette. The dormitory has a communal kitchen on each floor, a study room, a TV room, and a gym. It also has laundry and drying rooms available to residents.
It provides 24-hour reception service.
Łódź is a city of contrasts which intrigues almost at every step. It is full of factories and, at the same time, it is very green; eclectic but also avant-garde. Łódź dazzles with the lavishness of factory owners’ palaces and astonishes with artistic installations.
Although the history of the city spans over six hundred years, the dynamic development of Łódź came a little less than 200 years ago. From a small town it was in the beginning of the 19th century, it quickly became the “promised land” giving dozens of thousands of families hope for a better tomorrow. Around the city, you can find numerous traces of the multicultural working class melting pot. Łódź was such a pot up to World War II. After the war, having become the cinematic capital of Poland, it opened another important chapter of its history. In 2017 Łódź was inducted into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and named UNESCO City of Film. In 2019, it received the title of Best Value Destination from the well-known British travel guide publisher Lonely Planet. Meanwhile, in 2022, Łódź made it onto the National Geographic Best of the World list!
Today it is a creative city, a city of festivals, a city which is being discovered all over again. It is located in the very heart of Poland, at the crossing of two main highways – you could say that all the roads lead to… Łódź.
There are two major airports in close proximity to Łódź:
Warsaw Chopin Airport – it is one of the largest hub in Central Europe, serving most of the major international airlines including low-cost airlines like Norwegian or Wizzair.
The easiest way to travel to Łódź is by direct shuttle bus eg. Modlin Bus/Flixbus. The trip from the airport to Łódź Kaliska station takes about 2 hours. When you get out of the customs zone, you should follow the violet line on the floor, which will guide you to the bus station (outside). The tickets are available on the website (www.modlinbus.pl, www.flixbus.pl) and it is usually around 20 euros one-way per person. It is also usually possible to buy the tickets from the driver, but organising before may help avoid delays.
Another way to get to Łódź is by train. To reach the train station, which is located right inside the arrivals terminal, you should follow the green line on the floor, after leaving the customs zone. Then you should look for the train to Warszawa Zachodnia station, where you can interchange to train going to Łódź Fabryczna station. To get the full itinerary and to buy the tickets, we recommend the website (http://rozklad-pkp.pl/en), where you can look for the timetable of the connection between ‘Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina’ to ‘Łódź Fabryczna’ station.
Warsaw Modlin Airport – it is the second airport in the proximity of Warsaw, which serves as the Ryanair hub, so if you are flying with Ryanair there is a high chance you will end up at Warsaw Modlin.
Again, the easiest way to travel to Łódź is by direct shuttle bus Modlin Bus/flixbus. The trip from the airport to Łódź Kaliska station takes about 3 hours. The bus station is located just outside of the arrivals terminal. The tickets are available on the website (https://www.modlinbus.pl/, www.flixbus.pl) and it is usually around 10 euros one-way per person.
Another possibility is taking the train, however it is rather complicated due to several interchanges. Still, if you want to explore that option, to get a full itinerary and to buy the tickets, we recommend the website (http://rozklad-pkp.pl/en), where you can look for the timetable of the connection between ‘Modlin Lotnisko’ to ‘Łódź Fabryczna’ station.
Lodz Airport – there is also a small airport just outside the city center of Łódź (https://www.lodz-airport.pl/en), however the flight schedule is very limited and it is restricted to a few destinations. Nevertheless, if you have the opportunity to travel to this airport, you can easily reach the venue by public city transport or taking a taxi (Uber/Bolt and most other apps work in Lódź).
If you prefer to travel by bus, numerous connections are leading to Łódź. They are all provided by FlixBus. There are many direct or one-interchange connections from Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. All buses reach ‘Łódź Fabryczna’ station, which is near the venue. Tickets and timetables are only available online (www.flixbus.pl) and ticket prices are usually very affordable.
